Currently on Display

"Orange, France at Night"  Mixed Media
This was an experimental, abstract piece that I developed based on a photo Bill took in Orange, France.  It was definitely an exercise in stretching my boundaries and pushing to the limits of my comfort zone.  At the same time, it was fun!  "Orange, France at Night" is currently on display at Marie's Cafe on the square in downtown Medina.

Into the Woods

"Into the Woods"  Pastel receive Award of Merit, ArtWorks/'13

Brunswick ArtWorks annual member's exhibit was last week.  I'm pleased to announce that my painting, "Into the Woods," won an Award of Merit and is now on display at the FirstMerit Bank in Brunswick.  Now the excitement has ebbed and I again have time to relax...and, paint!

Fun with family...

"Floral Frolic"  Mixed Media
For my oldest daughter's recent birthday, we spent the day in my studio with her sisters and a close friend of mine, and we played!  Flights of Fantasy was created with acrylic paint and tissue paper.  I love to experiment and just have fun with paint and I think this painting looks playful.

Whimsical

"Three Queens"  Pastel
"Three Queens" is a reworked painting.  The original was quite heavy handed and although I wasn't comfortable with it, I wasn't initially sure what I wanted to do to correct the image.   A sense of lightness and whimsy was my goal.  So, I decided to brush off the pastel with a stiff brush.  Then, using a brush dipped in water,  I softened the remaining image.  Finally, I went in and reworked the painting, using the original composition but with a more delicate touch.

Plein Air

"Lake Isaac"  Pastel

A peaceful scene on a lovely morning.  Started on location, finished in the studio, this didn't come easily, but I think I'm where I want to be with it.  It feels comfortable.

Abstract acrylic floral

"Potted"  24 x 36 acrylic (sold)
In an earlier post I showed this painting, not yet completed, and explained that it was begun as a pure abstract but grew into a floral painting.  I find it challenging and inspiring to simply begin putting paint on a canvas and seeing where it takes me...letting the painting guide me.  Fun!

Current Events

"The Brass Chalice"  Watercolor  (sold)
I had the good fortune to sell the above painting at this year's Medina County Art-in-the-Park!  This popular show is presented annually by the Medina County Art League on historic Medina Square and draws artists from around the country.  Members of the art league are invited to display a few pieces of their work in the art league tent in exchange for volunteering their time assisting and sitting in for paid exhibitors to allow them a break.

Just Havin' Fun!

"Encaustic Adventure I"  4.5" x 6.5"

"Encaustic Adventure II"  5.75" x 5.75"
Encaustic paintings (wax) are so much fun to create.  When I do these, I love the feeling of depth that I can achieve.  They are sort of like clouds...it's easy to "see things" within.  Although they are small images, they attract attention because they are colorful and interesting.

In Progress...

Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 24" x 36"
My goal here is to work bigger and more loosely, more abstractly.  At this point, I'm nearing the finish line, but have some decisions to make.  The left side of the large crock needs to be darkened, and although I want that one to be extending off the bottom of the canvas, I'm debating about delineating the bottom of the narrower cylinder.  This piece began as, and was intended to be a pure abstract but, during the process I began to see it as a floral and decided to go with it.  Because I don't usually work this large, and am not totally comfortable with it, this has been a challenge.

Thinkin' Spring!

"Thinkin' Spring"  Watercolor (sold)

I have finally finished this little painting.  After quite a long dry spell, I'm finally painting again.  This was a fun painting to help me get motivated.

Happy New Year!

Well, we have survived the holidays and the new year is upon us!  As I am trying to keep warm during this cold spell, I decided to focus on what is ahead...SPRING!  So, when we got together this past week for our Art at the Center painting group, I decided to focus on just having fun, thinking spring,  and experimenting with a small watercolor.  I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but I keep reminding myself hat it truly is the journey that counts.
