One of my ongoing struggles in painting, is to get the values right.  Without that, it is not a good painting, no matter how precise the drawing might be or how strong the composition.  Values are what make a painting "POP."  I still have a bit of work to do on this piece, but I think I'm headed in the right direction.  I'll post an update when it is finished.

"Imagine"   Soft Pastel
This painting was strictly a fantasy...a chance to just experiment and see where my imagination might take me.  I had fun playing with the color and working to create the illusion of a stand of trees at the edge of a forest.

The Path

"The Path"   9" x 11"  Pastel
Several weeks ago I began this painting at our painting group.  It is roughly based on an image from one of my husband's photos from Iceland.  In his image, there was a large field of lupine, but I was working from memory...no photo reference, and I decided to just have fun and see what I could come up with.  When I hit a roadblock, I took it to our critique group for suggestions on how to proceed.  Taking their comments to heart, I implemented some of their suggestions and this is the end result.  It is quite a different color palette for me, and I had fun playing with the many layers of color.  This painting, along with 4 other of my pastels, will be on display at the Medina County Library from mid-June through mid-July.

Something New for Spring

"Spring is in the Air"   9" x 11" Pastel
With these lovely spring colors, I thought this would be an appropriate piece to post on this beautiful  Sunday in May.  I have been playing with abstract in acrylic for some time, but decided I wanted to try it with my favorite medium (for now)...soft pastel.  I'm pretty happy with this outcome, and plan to experiment further.
